Dick Spotswood Sees AIM's Potential

In today’s Marin IJ, opinion columnist Dick Spotswood writes an article about AIM (the Arts, Industrial and Maritime Preservation and Improvement Initiative on the ballot here in Sausalito this November).
It highlights AIM’s potential to create a better future for our waterfront and help Sausalito mitigate sea-level rise.
Spotswood writes that Marinship's future hinges on Sausalito voters' willingness to embrace change rather than fear it.
He points to sea-level rise as an inevitable, costly challenge, and that Marin bayfront towns like Sausalito will need to "come up with the cash to save their shoreline businesses and homes" — since federal help is unlikely.
He also cites our campaign’s key about how 40-years of restrictive zoning laws have made it nearly impossible for waterfront businesses to grow, reinvest, or generate the revenue needed to address aging infrastructure and rising seas.
And he calls out AIM opponents, noting that their website "depicts fanciful illustrations of the worst-case scenario" — an “old tactic,” he writes, designed to create “fear and opposition to change.”
Spotswood closes with this:
"AIM will succeed only if a majority of Sausalito voters dare to imagine a future that's even better than today's delightful reality. That takes courage, but imagining an improved outcome can deliver real world rewards."
